Ask Annie

Sept. 15, 2004

Dear Annie,

My best friend is getting married and I'll be the bride's maid. I volunteered to have a shower for her, but I don't know what to do! Help!

Missie in Onalaska, WA

Dear Missie,

Stop whining and start shining! Ask the bride for a list of those you should invite. Once you know your numbers, you'll know where you'll need to have the party, a house or church, grange, etc. Send out the invitations two weeks in advance so guests have time to get gifts. If the couple have registered at certain stores or websites, mention that in the invites. You'll need a cake. Mints, nuts, punch and party games are fun extras. Don't worry, they can be easy. An old favorite is the safety pin game. Each guest gets a pin as they arrive, and others can claim that if the wearer crosses their legs, or says the word "wedding," or whatever rules you make up. It is very hard for a room full of women to sit and visit without crossing their legs! One thoughtful thing you could do is buy thank you cards for your friend to send after the shower, and have the guests address them to themselves. Toward the end of the event, draw one (or more) of the cards from the basket for door prizes. At the last bridal shower I attended, we were given paper plates and pens, and were told to put the plates on top of our heads and draw a picture of the bride on her wedding day. Mine was in the style of Picasso, eyeballs off of the face and such. As the bride opens her gifts, have someone list them and who gave them. That will be much appreciated later! Relax and have fun! You'll do great.

Annie
