Ask Annie for Mar. 24, 2004

Dear Annie,

I'm being forced to participate in a big fancy wedding and I can't get out of it! This summer I'll be eighteen, and I've got a lot of plans, but flying to the east coast to stand in a hot church surrounded by my brother's snobby fiance's family and friends wasn't one of them! I'm a big girl, and the dress she chose makes me look like a sofa with a ruffled cover on it. I refused to buy it when she wouldn't modify the style for my figure (her other bridesmaids are all at least half my size) so her parents paid for it and sent it to me for Christmas. I sent her a photograph of myself wearing it to try to dissuade her, so she replied with beauty advice on my hair and makeup. She never even got the point that the dress makes me look like a rhino in a purple tablecloth! My mom says I'm behaving like a spoiled brat and should take advantage of the free trip and not hurt anyone's feelings. My dad said I could write to you, and if you thought it would be okay for me to back out, I could. Please, please, please be more reasonable than my parents!

Dear Hates,

Sorry, no can do. Your dad is a very smart man. You need to get over the purple dress and get on with things! Your rotten attitude could put a damper on your brother's wedding, something he and his wife will never forget. Please do your part to help make this wedding fantastic for everyone involved, and you won't regret it. I bet you'll have fun and meet some cool people. Write back and let us know how it

Annie
