Ask Annie for Dec. 10, 2003 Annie-
The holidays are upon us and I'd like to take this opportunity to thank everybody who donates food, money, work and thoughtful energy into the White Pass Community Food Bank. As a regular and dedicated volunteer with the food bank, I clearly see the reflection of our economy, not only here in East Lewis County, but in America as a whole. Health care is seriously flawed, homelessness is abundant, unemployment is rampant, our Veterans, our elderly and disabled and children are being systemati-cally tossed off to the side while cutbacks and downsizing in the political world take the lead. Be that as it may, we must take care of each other in times of need and trust me, it is a noble and honorable deed to help others.
I offer deep thanks to school Superintendant Dave McKenna and White Pass high school principle Brian Talbot, for allowing the use of the school's big truck to transfer food from our warehouse to the church where the food bank is located. Thanks to teachers Bobbie Barnes and Mike Elliot who drive the truck and special thanks to all of the youth who work so hard loading and unloading the truck for us. I believe that youth who participate in community service learn valuable lessons and it helps build poignant character. Thanks also to the AmeriCorp volunteers and mentors who are becoming part of the team.
Thanks to the late Rich Fuller and his family who own Fischer's Market, who have always been supportive to the food bank. Thanks also to Blanton's up in Packwood and Sentry's in Morton. Thanks to Key Bank and Morton General Hospital for their food and money drives. Thanks to Milt Mayberry with Area Agency on Aging, Diane Evans, editor of the East County Journal, Dennis De-gener, pastor of the Methodist church that houses the food bank and special gratitude to Dave Bunting and staff with the White Pass Shopper for their dedicated support not only to the food bank, but to our community as a whole.
Thanks to the many individuals who donate food, money, time and trucks to haul food in; Bonnie Brazil, Donna Lund, Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Pfeifer, Jerry and Dora Jeffries, Gary and Pat Schweers whose motorcycle club just donated a $300.00 check and plan on a toy run for Christmas and many others too numerous to mention. Thanks to Harvey Chandler of Hampton Mill who offers much support in our community. Special heartfelt thanks to Mrs. Food Bank herself, Lois Jones.
Finally, deep appreciation is offered to the many volunteers at the food bank who put in 485-plus hours of work just in the month of November. Their dedication is awesome and without all of these people working together within our community, many of our families would go hungry. May all of you have a safe and wonderful holiday!
