Ask Annie for Sept. 17, 2003

Dear Annie,

I have a friend who always wants to put everything on E-Bay and sell it for you, only she never gives you the money. I didn't know this until she had taken several of the things I was going to put in the flea market this year, and offered to put them on her site to sell. Most of them were smaller dollar items, old books, postcards, and a few antique dolls, but a few I was going to ask more than a hundred dollars for. This has been going on since spring, with me seeing her and asking, "Did you sell anything?" and her telling me she has to get it all sorted out, my things from hers, etc., or other vague responses. She never gives me an exact dollar amount, either, even when I press her. I think she sold a lot of it and kept the money. Should I just write it off, and chalk it up to experience, or keep bringing it up?

Unhappy Camper in Packwood

Dear Unhappy,

I wouldn't just write it off. She has a responsibility to either give you back your things, or the money she got for selling them. I would do two things: go on the website and see what she has for sale. Then you can ask for those things that you see that are yours, back, and ask for the proceeds from the sales of those things that were yours, that aren't there anymore. You don't need to waffle or feel bad about this, because you are not the one trying to pull off something dishonest here. Thank her for trying, but tell her you're ready to put an ad in the paper or put them in your yard sale yourself.
