Ask Annie for Aug. 6, 2003

Dear Readers,

This week we found out what good family and friends we have by accident. Literally. There was an accident at my husband's workplace that resulted in a fatality, and my husband, foreman of the crew, felt horrible. People responded quickly and sincerely, with cards, visits, phone calls, and plants. Isn't it wonderful, in this world where it sometimes seem only evil thrives, to remember there's so much love around? Plain old, everyday, unpretentious love coming out of friends that can put an arm around someone crying and say, "I'm sorry." Always there, old faithful, unshakable love that shows in the eyes of family when they see a sad relative and say, "Are you okay?" It helps. Just know it helps. Next time you hear something bad has happened to someone you know, the kind of thing that makes you think, "Oh. I should call him. But I don't know..." Know. Know that you calling might be the one bright spot in that day, even if you call and all you say is, "I'm sorry. I wish that hadn't happened." Be there for the hurting heart. It helps.
