Ask Annie for July 23, 2003

Dear Annie,

The letter from the man in Mineral whose motion sensor sprayed the would-be robbers with water and scared them off reminded me of a similar story. My husband likes to go hunting in the fall, and I'm a school bus driver, so I can't miss work and go with him that time of year. We used to live in a rather seedy part of Tacoma, so I was really scared one night when I heard sticks cracking outside my house. Whoever was out there, and whatever they planned, was cut short when they shined their flashlight on my scarecrow, and it scared the bejeebers out of them! All I could see from the window was a light bobbing back down the road! Don't worry, we're both retired now, so when hubby's gone, I'm with him.

Still Chuckling in Packwood

Dear Still Chuckling,

God has a sense of humor, and He watches out for us day and night. I also heard from someone here in Eatonville who said their Halloween decorations frightened a would-be prankster so bad he or she dropped the toilet paper they were planning to stream around in the yard and ran!

Annie

Dear Annie,

I'm still thinking about the letters about children's names from back in February. I've never lived anywhere else but here, but I often wonder if other places have people with as colorful nicknames as we do. I went to school with people called Tiger, Muffy, Chainsaw, Babe, and Pumpkin. We've got a neighbor called Pony and a friend that goes by Toots.

No Nickname, Chehalis

Dear No,

I like nicknames, and wondering how they ever came about. I can tell you this little town has its share of colorful titles, too, from Killer to Caveman. Readers, care to share others?

Annie
